According to Nikki Finke Nielsen and Reed Business Information will serve up their entertainment trade publications in new ways. For Reed which publishes Variety.com, they will erect a paid wall in front of the site to start making some money from all or parts of the site. Nielsen which publishes The Hollywood Reporter (THR), will save some money by killing the print edition and rolling to a strictly web based existence. Nikki shares the opinion of many when she says "this is a necessary step if the financially beleaguered trades are going to survive the current economic downturn. Even if advertising does pick up for other media outlets". For those who worked on the print edition of THR, there is no doubt a dark cloud of doubt hangs over their heads. When a publication kills print and rolls strictly to the web, jobs are lost but new jobs are also created. I wonder whats on the Horizon for Billboard, another Nielsen publication? Billboard.com already has portions of their recently revamped site as paid only with access sold in subscription packages with the print edition. But will we see the print edition put to bed?
