Universal Freston? Naaaaaahhh

Published: Friday, September 29, 2006

The New York Post's Tom Arango says that NBC Universal heir apparent Jeff Zucker could see his dream job handed to former Viacom CEO Tom Freston. But we like to think that Tom is off somewhere in Asia enjoying some overdue R&R with wife Kathy. We just don't see Tom Freston at NBC Universal.

Jeff Immelt wants to see other people - including a casual encounter with Tom Freston - before he makes a commitment to Jeff Zucker

One source close to the company insisted Zucker was still the likely successor - as GE execs have said publicly - and described the search as a necessary step to convince Wall Street and GE's board that a wide range of candidates were vetted.

Immelt, in a statement given to The Post, said, "I have confidence in the leadership team at NBC Universal. I'm a fan of Jeff Zucker's. There is no search."

Morning Wire: Mark Cuban to big media-Don't be a moran

He should know. Billionaire Mark Cuban made his fortune after seeling a little website he and and a buddy founded called broadcast.com to yahoo! for a nice sum. Now he is saying that anyone who buys Youtube is an idiot. He also said the site will eventually be "sued into oblivion"

"They are just breaking the law," Cuban told a group of advertisers in New York. "The only reason it hasn't been sued yet is because there is nobody with big money to sue."

There is a reason they haven't yet gone public, they haven't sold. It's because they are going to be toasted,"

User-generated content is not going away, but do you want your advertising dollars spent on a video of Aunt Jenny watching her niece tap dance?"

It was only a matter of time: Jessica Cohen will Gawk no more

Published: Thursday, September 28, 2006

Nick Denton's stable of "snarky" (god we hate that word) bloggers has just gotten thinner with a late announcement from Gawker Editrix Jessica Cohen that she has tendered here two weeks notice. Ms. Cohen is headed for the more posh and rich, Vanity Fair where she will take a nice little spot as Deputy Editor of VanityFair.com

Said Jessica Cohen in her "Letter From The Editor Posting":

After over two years and somewhere around 6000 items, I'm finally selling out. Don't get me wrong -- I've been trying to sell out for ages, but no publisher seems interested in my haphazardly written roman à clef about a silly girl who moves from LA to New York to write some crazy media gossip blog and eventually discover herself while learning some really valuable life lessons.

We can't wait to see who takes her seat on the Denton ship. We are sure Co-Editor Alex Balk has his eye on the spot and will probably get it too. [Gawker]

King Rupe loves the newspaper business so much he bought two more

Apparently Rupert Murdoch still has great love for the business which is Newscorp's foundation......The newspaper business. King Rupe is said to have bagged two more to add to his already crowded stable which includes the daily tabloid the NY Post.

With the move, News Corporation is increasing its reach to the boroughs outside Manhattan and the minority populations that have been strongholds of its main competitor, The Daily News. While the price of the acquisition was not disclosed, someone close to the deal but not authorized to speak about the matter said News Corporation paid $16 million for the two operations: the TimesLedger and Courier-Life newspaper groups.

Rupe really getting into the tabloid look of things

One of our favorite daily tabloids The New York post finally pulled the curtains back on their brand new website. It kinda looks like Radar's new website as well not that that's a good thing. The new site even as a stalker map much just like the one our friends in our head at Gawker made famous. They can't be too happy about that though. Now we can't wait for the Daily News to roll out their new design. Wonder if they too will have the Daily Stalker? [NYP]

Morning Wire: Dauman, best and worst dressed and Rupe ups his share

And now the morning's worthy media business news:

New Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman better deliver or else. No Sumner Redstone didn't say that but we know he is thinking it. Mr. Dauman got his chance to lay out his vision and plans for the company at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia XV Conference. An eye on Philippe Dauman

Published: Tuesday, September 26, 2006

Since taking over as CEO of Viacom, Philippe P. Dauman has been making the rounds glad handing his minions and their minions. We will be keeping a close eye on Mr. Dauman heading into the new year. He said that he is only looking to purchase internet companies that fit with Viacom if they are under $100 Million, so he must be talking about a blog network or something!! He is seen (right) with the Tom Freston hand picked Brad Grey who is head of Viacom's movie business. Is this a show of confidence in Brad or just making the seen?

We will be checking in on Mr. Dauman from time to time to see if he is in the office or traveling on business. No we're serious. Of course we'll get some hang ups when we call Viacom but we will report on that too. So Mr. Dauman, the eye is on you.

Who knew? Online advertising has a dark side

Published: Monday, September 25, 2006

Businessweek this week takes into the dark pit that is online advertising. EntrepreneurMartin Fleischmann knows all too well the hell of "Click Fraud". Even with all his levels of education he still got duped. The 40-year-old entrepreneur believed the celebrated promise of Internet marketing: You pay only when prospective customers click on your ads.

From Businessweek.com:
Now, Fleischmann's faith has been shaken. Over the past three years, he has noticed a growing number of puzzling clicks coming from such places as Botswana, Mongolia, and Syria. This seemed strange, since MostChoice steers customers to insurance and mortgage brokers only in the U.S. Fleischmann, who has an economics degree from Yale University and an MBA from Wharton, has used specially designed software to discover that the MostChoice ads being clicked from distant shores had appeared not on pages of Google or Yahoo but on curious Web sites with names like insurance1472.com and insurance060.com. He smelled a swindle, and he calculates it has cost his business more than $100,000 since 2003.

Morning Wire: Those Digg guys, Sumner Redstone's pay revision and more...

And now the morning's worthy media business news according to us:

Viacom grand-daddy Sumner Redstone and his two top execs are tightening the belts on annual compensation...........Theirs. Beginning in 2007, Redstone's salary will be reduced to $1 million per year from $1.75 million and deferred compensation of $1.3 million per year will be eliminated. Redstone's target cash bonus under Viacom's short-term incentive plan will be reduced to $3.5 million per year from $6.1 million. He will also receive an annual award of stock options having a grant-date value of $3 million and an annual award of performance share units with a grant-date target value of $3 million. The Jeff Bewkes doctrine is so in motion already

Published: Friday, September 22, 2006

Time Warner is selling off it's AOL France Internet business to Neuf Cegetel for about $365 million signaling the start of what many on Wall Street will call a long overdue diet plan. The company put a cluster of magazines on the block earlier this week and now they are trimming up the AOL unit. When Jeff Bewkes takes over Time Warner will be a lean mean media machine.

Under the agreement, Neuf Cegetel will acquire AOL's Internet access business in France, including its 500,000 broadband customers. The French company will also acquire its ASME operation, which manages AOL France's customer service operations.

Earlier this week, Time Warner said it reached an all-cash deal to sell AOL Germany's Internet access business to Telecom Italia SpA for about $870 million. Time Warner has said it wants to shed AOL's U.K. access business as well.

Guess they are only interested in AOL's U.S. business

Mediawire Daily's Best & Worst Dressed Media Moguls...sort of

Published: Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Today's media mogul should be a man orwoman of a certain style. However some don't even know what the word style means. The there are some who at least try to look the dapper part. We look at some of todays well known media execs. Their style and share with you what we think. Some are good and some are bad...we mean really bad. We give respect to those who pull it together well and shame those who just don't have a clue. As the public face of a company one would think some effort would be put into one's appearance...and some do and to them we say Looking Good.

Continue>>>

1-Rupert Murdoch: Believe it or not Rupe has some style to him and we think its all via his wife Wendy who herself is a fashion plate. Rupe is always seen in well tailored expensive suits which hilites his billionaire status. We love seeing him tuxed out at the Vanity Fair parties and move premiers. So out of all the other best dressed moguls we will mention Rupe comes out on top.

2- Richard Parsons: Yes Mr. Parsons comes in second behind Rupe because well…. For a man his size it takes a lot to look that good in clothes. Mr. Parsons' well tailored suits just scream power.

3- Peter Chernin: Rupert's number two is unfortunately are number 3 on our list but still in the top five. Mr. Chernin with is ever present glasses and sharp suits landed him here. His corporate casual is also worth talking about. At a recent even Mr. Chernin paired a brown suede jacket with a black v-neck sweater, faded blue jeans and black shoes. Nice

4- Bob Iger: Disney boss Robert Iger is what we call, has what we call a school boy safe fashion sense. He is in between, which drops him at number four in the top five. Bob always looks well put together on corporate outings, with his perfectly combed hair and school boy grin. His suits don't look all that expensive but it works. For a casual look Bob does the usual media mogul casual dress. Button down shirt tucked into khakis brown belt and brown shoes. Common but safe.

5: Les Moonves: The ever tanned Les Moonves rounds out our top five with his expensive suits and overly polished shoes. Showing all signs of a serious metro-sexual Les never looks anything less than put together, and it works for him. With his height a power suit is in need and they always look good on him. Les casual style is also well laid out. At a recent even Les paired khakis with a tucked in polo shirt and brown loafers. We wouldn't have chosen the loafers but you know what….it works for Les. His salt and pepper hair is always well coifed and his smile gets whiter by the day. Being permanently tanned also works in his favor.

Now we that we got our top five best dressed media moguls out the way. It is now time to talk about the not so well dressed. Some of them are really bad too.

6- Jeff Bewkes: His tall slim frame gives him a lot of room to experiment with clothes. However Time Warner’s number two has stuck to the same get up since his HBO days. Dark suites & Ties Italian shoes and a smile for good measure. We would like to see Jeff in lighter colored suites, maybe some Jeans and a sports coat and maybe even some shades. Jeff should also try to correct his posture which seems to be slightly hunched

7-Jeff Zucker: Though many of you are probably saying why he is on the list because he doesn't fit into the media mogul category. Say what u want because soon he will. Anyway Jeff has had some hits and misses over the years. However we have to say since taking full control of NBC Universal's television business he kinda stepped it up a notch. And why shouldn't he? What if GE CEO Jeff Immelt calls him in for a quick sit down or just to have lunch or something? Jeff rocks the typical TV exec get up. Not so hot suit with OK ties and well polished shoes. However he needs to take it easy on the layers because of his height.

8-Tom Freston: Even though we were and still are big fans of TomCo, we always wished we could slap him with the style stick sometimes. He has had some hits and misses. Sometimes Tom's attire gives off an I don’t give a fuck vibe. We don't know if this is what he is going for but it doesn't fly sometimes. Tom was known for showing up in black suits and a blue tucked in button shirt no tie slightly sloppy at MTV events. However there were sometimes where he just had this cool to him like last year when he was snapped outside his Manhattan apartment wearing a block leather short cut jacket blue jeans and shoes. This is what we think the casual media mogul should look like. He has plenty of time on his hands to get it together fully now.

9-Mel Karmazin: We don't know. Mel just doesn't do it for us at all. Maybe it's the teeth!

10- Sumner Redstone: Someone please slap this little old man three times with the style stick please. Viacom grand daddy Sumner Redstone has aid on record that buys off the rack suits at a discount. His shoes look clumpy and his clothes just always seem to swallow him up. If his wife Paula has his ear on business issues, why won’t she tell this man to bring in a stylist of something? The again she needs help herself. For these reasons Mr. Redstone is our only worst dressed media mogul on the list.

  • Jeff Bewkes is really getting the hang of things, and he may have put AOL on the path to recovery which will make Wall Street welcome him with open arms once he takes over. Wonder what Dick's been up to? Probably getting his team together to take NYC by storm in 09 [NYP]

Sumner and Rupert loves em young

Media Moguls Sumner Redstone and Rupert Murdoch share something in common. Their wives are young enough to be their daughters and they love it that way and Stuart Fischoff, professor emeritus of media psychology at Cal State L.A thinks he knows why.

Call it the "fountain of youth effect. He says younger wives can be revitalizing for aging lions. "It's a generalized arouser, giving a sense of purpose, a new spirit … a new inspiration," he said.

Both wives swing big sticks when it comes to their husbands and their businesses though Sumner Redstone would never admit it only saying that "he listens to his wife but he makes his own decisions". Can you say Tom Cruise and maybe even Tom Freston?

After News Corp. purchased DirecTV in 2003, Deng, who is of Chinese descent, hired feng shui experts to rid the El Segundo headquarters of bad vibes. Murdoch had installed a new president, but the feng shui experts considered his office overlooking the ocean and the mountains unlucky, given his date of birth. So he was moved to an office with a view of a parking garage and a sewage treatment plant.

Les Moonves: Napoleon complex, Or shrewd CEO?

Published: Friday, September 15, 2006

Les "Love Boat" Moonves has been on a roll since Viacom split in two giving him his own castle to be king. On those looong earnings conference calls, those media Q&A's Les's voice is heard over all due to the alcoholic-esque deep raspiness in his voice. He is said to be a hard worker and even on vacation he commands the troops from the yacht with wife Julie rolling her eyes.

But what's behind Les's obsession with winning and keeping his name in the good headlines? Is he just a serious take no prisoner's media exec or is he making up for other short comings we can't see, or so he thinks? We were shocked when we saw the pic (right) of Les with Chris Silbermann and Charlie Rose. He is literally dominated by the two towers he stands between. We always thought he was taller than that. We've seen him several times in person but he never looked that short.

Labels:

But seeing this headline above though two days late, we still had to ask if people really expected Les Moonves to know that his co-worker was getting the axe. We like to think that there is some kind of professionalism in Sumner's house when it comes to things of this matter. This gets a big NO SHIT!!

Morning Wire: Comcast should buy Viacom?

CNNmoney media biz columnist Paul R. La Monica writes an open letter style commentary to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts advising him to kick the tires on Viacom. But we would like to think that Mr. Roberts may already have minions in his ear about Viacom as well as other potential take over targets.

Seriously, Brian, Chairman Sumner Redstone might be willing to sell out if the price is right. After all, even if he gave up control of one of his babies, he's still chairman of CBS. And everybody loves Les Moonves and right now. It's Viacom that's making Sumner poorer on paper.

Well we can't help but to agree on this suggestion. However Sumner Redstone seems like a stubborn little old man and unless new CEO Philippe P. Dauman really has his ear on such deals, Viacom will forever be in his wrinky hands.

True but his fellow media moguls like Rupert Murdoch and Bob Wright seem to think differently after spending over $1 Billion between them to grab their piece of the web community.

"I'm not used to being the underdog, but it was a good position to be in. We've kept our heads down and done our work," Moonves said. "It's much better to underperform and overdeliver."
