Who knew? Sumner Redstone could be humiliated

Published: Tuesday, October 31, 2006

Sumner Redstone has a love life you know, he is probably a stud in bed too. The media mogul didn't reveal any of the above in Vanity Fair but he sure did, share his thoughts on weirdo movie star Tom Cruise and explained how his rival Rupert Murdoch, humiliated him leading him to can Tom Freston. VF takes us inside Grandpa Sumner's home and chats it up with him and wife Paula who is slowly but surely calling some serious shots of her own within her husband's media empire.

An afternoon spent at the Redstone home doesn't entirely dispel the theory. Sitting in a straight-backed chair in the living room, attired in an unfortunate blue plaid jacket and black shoes, Redstone comes across as feisty as he did when he burst onto the financial scene, 20 years ago. But he looks frail and has a senior moment or three, losing his train of thought, repeating stories, and asking that a question or two be repeated. Still, he appears in total command, roundly attacking Cruise and, while emphasizing how much he admires Freston, trashing him nonetheless. He appears in command, that is, until the very end, when he stands to shake my hand and, to my horror, suddenly lurches to one side and begins to fall.

This poor guy doesn't realize that he is just too old for the game.

Businessweek's Best Young Entrepreneurs are scary looking but kinda smart

Businessweek reminds us that we're losers with their Top 50 Entrepreneuers list. We can't help but wonder which one of these youngsters will hit the corporate takeover lotto? Our money is on the music website AmieStreet.com. Some of the businesses founded by these smarties seem boring when reading about it, but it can work out to major dollars in the long run. However there is one we just don't get and its called First Flavor. Here is what this company does:

First Flavor, developed the technology to manufacture small soluble flavor strips and filed a patent in 2005. Advertisers will soon be able to offer prospective customers sample sachets for products like flavored vodka, soda, and candy.

Now why would we want to lick a strip to taste Vodka or anything else for that matter. Scratch and sniff is enough for us thank you.

Time Warner shares remain Bewkerized

The gang at Time Warner are probably all smiles due to the fact that the stock seems to be rising from the dead and analyst are feeling pro Time Warner lately.

Time Warner was up 6 cents at $20 after Cowen's Lowell Singer said the shares are poised to break a three-year trading range of $15 to $20 and outperform the market by at least 15% over the next 12 months.

"We are encouraged by AOL's aggressive new advertising-focused strategy," Singer wrote. "While it will take several years for investors to fully evaluate the success of the strategy, near term data points are likely to be positive and drive margin improvement in its newly acquired Adelphia systems."

Creddit: CondeNast reportedly snapping up Reddit

Adding to what may become yet another "Headline Lemming Effect" we wanted to dub this alleged union "Creddit". If CondeNast did indeed snap up Reddit, its a clear sign that Charles Townsend is making sure that Conde's digital dick is solid enough to swing with the big boys. So will Reddit fall under the CondeNet umbrella or remain as a stand alone?

Google gets green light to swallow Chad and company

U.S. antitrust gave their OK for Google to swallow YouTube which means it's check cutting time. No one is more happier than Chad Hurley and Steve Chan. We can only imagine the ass these two are going to get with their new found mega fortunes. Lets wait and see how long it will take for one of them to fall into Hollywood circles.

Mo Martha, Mo Martha, Mo Martha

Jeff Zucker and company has decided to give us another dose of Martha Stewart renewing the domestic diva's show for a third season.

We are thrilled with Martha's strong return to daytime television and the overwhelmingly positive response we have received from our local broadcast partners and viewers," said Barry Wallach, president of NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. "Martha's fresh and lively approach to how-to instruction, mixed with the show's live format, has been a winning combination from the start."

Added executive producer Mark Burnett: "Thanks to NBC Universal and our station partners for showing such incredible support so early in this, our second season. We look forward to a third year of entertaining content, filled with great storytelling and how-to information that will make a difference in the daily lives of our viewers."

Well put Mark.

Morning Wire: Paula Redstone pulled the trigger on Tom Cruise and more.....

And now the mornings worthy media news:

Paula Redstone hates Tom Cruise
After all is said and done, it was Paula Redstone, wife of Sumner who pulled the trigger on Tom Cruise. Gandpa Sumner tells it like it is in the December issue of Vanity Fair and man is he still ripping Tom Cruise a new ass hole. "Paula, like women everywhere, had come to hate him. The truth of the matter is, I did listen to her . . ." Redstone says. "His behavior was entirely unacceptable to Paula and to the rest of the world. He just didn't turn one [woman] off. He turned off all women, and a lot of men." With all the money Tom Cruise allegedly cost Paramount Pictures, is there a lawsuit brewing?

Entertainment & Politics
Is it a coincidence that some of the major organizations in the entertainment/media industry are ran by former underlings of past administrations? No matter what next week's election brings, Dan Glickman, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Assn. of America (MPAA), said he hopes to expand the major studios' agenda beyond the House and Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees. He plans to mount a push in the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee; because all revenue bills are constitutionally required to begin in the House, that panel is key.

Again.....Start a rumor, pretend, and get some leg room to recover
We've been saying that this is the new norm in media when execs want to generate interest, spike the stock price of their companies or to simply get shareholders and people like Carl Icahn off their asses. They either pretend to be in talks to merge with, or buy another company. Or they pretend to put themselves on the block like Tribune in this case..Allegedly. " As circulation at Tribune Co.'s biggest newspapers continues to nose dive, some Wall Street bankers are wondering whether the media giant and owner of the Chicago Cubs is serious about selling itself in the first place."

Some CondeNast execs want to end digital/print apartheid

Published: Monday, October 30, 2006

Some CondeNast execs are speaking out from behind an article in Crain's New York Business saying that they want to take control of their own online destiny. All Conde's online properties are current controlled and managed by Condenet the online unit of CondeNast which is run by President Sarah Chubb. As big and as influential as Vogue may be, it's website which it shares with sister pubs like W has week traffic and its getting weaker. Will Conde CEO Charles Townsend listen?

Magazine executives, who would speak only if granted anonymity, say that with the center of gravity shifting toward the Internet, they no longer want their online identities controlled by a separate division that not only administers the sites but collects the ad revenue, too.Insiders aren't the only ones complaining. Media buyers eager to reach new audiences also want to see the digital and print sides unite.

"More and more agencies are looking for one-stop shopping," says George Janson, director of print for WPP Group's Mediaedge:cia. "I'd like to see Condé Nast lead the charge."

Since no one else will, we'll ask: Did Liz Spiers take the bait?

Ok so it has been almost forever now since Dealbreaker Liz Spiers claimed to have gotten some inside juice about a possible new hire at MTV in the Presidential suite. However we have kept close watch on this alleged scoop and searched high and low for any other sites talking about this possible hire without referring to Dealbreaker and we couldn't find one. Not saying Liz is pulling our legs but unless this announcement is coming later on today or tomorrow nothing is moving at MTVN. Is MTV hiring Mika Salmi or is it just what Dealbreaker called it, "vicious unconfirmed rumors"?

From DealBreaker:
UPDATE: In the "more passable" vein (fun!) Now we're told Salmi's promotion is a bit further down the chain. Salmi's heading MTV (the channel) but not MTV (the entire division). [Ed.--Less interesting! Boooooo!]

Afternoon Wire: And now the afternoon's worthy media news

Even though Liz Spiers at Dealbreaker.com got scooped in that MTV may and then later on did hire a new president of something, the only news we could find related MTV so far has nothing to do with the scoop. Published: Friday, October 27, 2006

Our friends over at Dealbreaker broke that they heard that some new guy who runs Atom Films is going to be announced as the new President of MTV. We were kinda confused however with the headline they chose which read " And the Tom Freston Replacement Is...." As far as we know Tom Freston's replacement is Philippe Dauman who is now CEO of all of Viacom which is what Tom Freston was when he got canned. However, being that MTV's current president is Christina Norman, If this is true, should we expect some kind of shuffling in Judy's house this coming week? Is Christina Norman leaving the company or is Judy McGrath pulling her up? We hate having to wait to hear what is what?

Did we mention that the Bewkes Doctrine is already in play at Time Warner?

So the stock price of the world's biggest media company finally hit a new note since 2000 and all are hoping that it continues to hit even greater notes. Sure the new stock movement can be credited to the fact that Wall Street is paying attention to how well Time Warner's cable business, which accounts for a quarter of the company's sales is doing. But no one can ignore certain plans put in play by Time Warner number two, soon to be number one Jeff Bewkes. Like we said before in our lengthy coverage of Mr. Bewkes, his finger prints are all over what Time Warner is doing now and we are all taking notice.

Revenue at Time Warner Cable increased 15 percent in the second quarter thanks to strong increases in subscribers for digital cable, Internet phone and high-speed data services. Profits, as measured by OIBDA, were up 16 percent.

Tom Freston's an asshole

Tom Freston was roasted by his big media friends and even the man who took his job. But it was all in good fun.....we think.

"How bad it must feel for Tom to be screwed over by a man so old that he needed a little blue pill to do it," said News Corp. president Peter Chernin to a big laugh

"I don't think there's anyone in this room today who feels Viacom treated Tom fairly. And I think everyone here knows Tom's continued success will haunt Viacom for years to come - but enough about Tom Cruise. We're here to talk about Tom Freston - and Tom Freston is an [bleep]hole."

"While you were all at Michael's yesterday, I was creating content," Freston said.

"I could go on forever, but if I don't get going, I'll never get a seat at Starbucks," he cracked. "It gets crazy busy."

Tom Freston not burning Viacom bridges just in case

Tom Freston, the canned CEO of Viacom is making sure not to burn bridges to his former employer .

For 26 years I had the incredible good fortune of working at a job I felt passionate about," Freston told fellow media moguls in New York, where his career was honored by the Center for Communication.

"Nothing will ever change the good feelings I have for Viacom," said Freston, one of the founding executives of youth-oriented MTV networks.

AMI's David Pecker should be canned and replaced by Mary Berner

We don't know how David Pecker still manages to hold on to his job as CEO of American Media, publishers of gossip rags like Star, Enquire and others. The stock has been getting a beat down circ is reportedly down on Star and now they missed a third deadline to restate its earnings. Is this company being mismanaged or what?

Maybe its time for change at the top and we think we have the right candidate for the job. Former Fairchild Prexy Mary Berner quit her gig after being demoted when her company was thrown under the Conde Nast umbrella. We haven't heard anything about Ms. Berner since. We think she has been laying in the cut waiting to see an opportunity to resurface again and we think we found it. David Pecker wouldn't have to completely be out of the picture, he can still play the chairman roll but Ms. Berner will be calling the shots. We're not sure how Bonnie Fuller would get along with her new boss but AMI needs some new blood and if it mean Bonnie getting the boot too then so bit it.

According to Techcrunch.com Rupert Murdoch is at it again in his never ending effort to rule the world. King Rupe and company is said to be in talks with Digg's owners about a possible deal, but the Digg guys are said to be asking for too much.

It appears that rumors of the upcoming financing led News Corp. and possibly others to initiate acquisition discussions with Digg, and the discussions were subsequently opened up to other interested parties as well. No formal written offers for Digg were tabled, sources say, because Digg’s minimum sell price was at least $150 million.

YouTube's impact on media and Hollywood is huge and everyone wants in. United Talent Agency wants in so bad that they actually set up an online unit which will scout and sign hot "Online" talent who are creating worthy content and find them work.

The move by the United Talent Agency — best known as the home of comedians like Vince Vaughn and Jack Black, filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan and television producers like Dick Wolf and David Chase — amounts to a bet, albeit a modest one, that Web video is on a growth curve similar to that of cable television a generation ago. It is also a return by Hollywood’s core talent representatives to the sort of new-media business they tested, without great success, at the peak of the dot-com boom.

NBC to test the Canadian waters

Published: Tuesday, October 24, 2006

NBC's recent hit show which is prompting Jeff Zucker to go the non-scripted rout is about to get a run in Canada hopefully before a bust.

Last June at their upfront in Toronto, CanWest Global executives invited Howie Mandel north to promote their pickup of his hit NBC game show Deal Or No Deal. Mandel went on stage at Massey Hall and played a mini version of Deal, improvising by using his hand as the dealer phone and choosing from among just four briefcase-toting models before giving a few thousand dollars away to ad industry insiders.

This January, Mandel will be coming back to his native city to host the real Deal: Five all-Canadian editions of the Endemol game show. Global made the announcement yesterday and plan to air the episodes next spring.

Taking on big media even when you know you won't win

Published: Monday, October 23, 2006

Two groups are challenging the FCC's recent easing of media rules which will allow old hands like Rupert Murdoch and Sumner Redstone to take even more control of what you watch, when you watch it and how you watch it. The Benton Foundation and the Social Science Research Council, are arguing that the little guy will be cut out of the pie if big media firms are allowed to swallow up more vehicles for delivery of entertainment, news, music etc.

At the end of the day, sure the FCC will review the report submitted by these groups or so they say, but both groups know that the FCC, who is now in bed with the big media companies instead of policing them will rule in the direction they have already started moving in anyway.

BET, the sleeping giant

We have to say that in the past we have been huge critics of the cable network Black Entertainment Television and we still have some gripes now and then. But the network has been stepping up their game and people are taking notice. BET's president of Entertainment Reginald Hudlin is the man behind the new look and feel of BET and he is just getting started. Now if only they can get the hosts of 106 & park to stop speaking to the viewing audience as if they are all on a corner or something.

BET can become as big a brand as MTV. But it has to do it with original programming and must avoid one legacy of the Johnson years.

"BET has always been a successful network, it's always made a lot of money, but for it to grow and for it to become a network that really transcends entertainment, there really has to be an infusion of cash. You can't do a network on the cheap."

Weekend Wire: See? Spark a rumor spike your stock

Published: Saturday, October 21, 2006

We said it before and we'll say it again, "Spark a rumor, spike your stock". This seems to be the formula being used in the media industry these days. Talks of secret deals in the works will pop up on the wires and in your local newspaper's business section about two rivals possibly getting in bed together, and then both companies will respond in the same manner if contacted by the media. Either they don't comment on speculations! or they just wont comment at all.

This week's rumor mill looks like it will be all about a possible Time Warner takeover of Long Island's Cablevision. However we have to admit that if this turns out to be true, we would hope that Time Warner is only looking to buy the company's cable operations due to the fact that the last thing Time Warner needs is real estate (CV owns Radio City Music Hall & Madison Square Garden) and even more so, sports teams (CV owns the NY Knicks and NY Rangers). A merger between Time Warner's cable business and CV's cable business would make sense for Time Warner, as the company has been looking at ways to expand their cable reach. Lets see how this one plays out, if at all.

Weekend Wire: Rupe's poison pill may work for now but.....

Rupert Murdoch is at rest mentally now that he doesn't have to worry about News Corp shareholder John Malone launching an attack to take control of the company he built. News Corp's shareholders voted to keep the "Poison Pill" defense strategy in place which prevents John Malone from increasing his shares in the company. But the pill is only through 2008, what will happen then? King Rupe is hoping that John Malone and company will take his offer, which calls for Liberty Media which is controlled by Malone to take News Corp's stake in Direct TV in exchange for Liberty's 19% stake in News Corp. But why would Malone take this bait when he could basically wait out the poison pill and take another run at increasing his share in News Corp in 08, or if he has big balls, which we think he does, take over the whole company.

We don't know what Mr. Malone thinks of king Rupe but one person shot King Rupe straight during yesterday's News Corp meeting:

Mr. Murdoch, I believe that you are a good man with solid values, said Lee Weil, the group's chairman, and yet News Corporation has clearly carved out a niche for itself by specializing in smutty, vulgar and violent entertainment, all in pursuit of profit.
