Conde Nast Looking to Outsource Some Back End Magazine Functions to Rival Hearst, Could Mean More Layoffs

According to WWD.com, incoming Conde Nast CEO Bob Sauerberg has been chatting it up with Hearst magazines President Dave Carey about the later taking on some of Conde's back end magazine functions. Conde Nast is hoping to be Hearst's latest client for its HMPS division. A deal to outsource select back end functions to Hearst could mean more layoffs at Conde Nast in the New Year when Mr. Sauerberg officially takes over.
The new HMPS venture is an outgrowth of CDS, which is operated separately from Hearst. CDS already manages certain end-to-end outsourcing for 450 print and digital publishers, including such functions as order management, payment and customer service. Current clients include magazines from big publishers like Condé Nast and Rodale to smaller ones like August Home Publishing and Garden & Gun LLC.
